I have an announcement & an invitation.

Boyce Upholt (The Great River) just launched an exciting new publication, Southlands magazine, and I’m happy to share that I’ve signed on as Assistant Editor.

The South’s wild nature shapes who we are. From the mountain hollers of my home to coastal marshes to gardens and overgrown lots, our habitats tell stories as rich and complex as the people who inhabit them. Southlands is born from a belief that these places deserve celebration—and protection—equal to any landscape in America.

Southlands will be a biannual keepsake magazine that brings the South’s hidden habitats to your doorstep—printed on premium stock in an oversized 9.5”×12” format made for your bookshelf, not the recycle bin. Each 140-page issue will connect you with the region’s most distinctive places through the eyes of writers and photographers who know them intimately.

And this is your magazine, too.

Southlands is a writer-owned, independent publication launching without outside backing, so we’re seeking support to directly fund this storytelling that celebrates our region. We’re inviting 1,200 founding members to join as partners in building this new community by August 15—ensuring our Fall 2025 launch and helping establish the South’s first region-wide premium outdoor publication.

You are invited to join us as a partner and founding member.

I look forward to bringing this vision forth with all of you, for the lands and waters we hold dear.
